LISBON, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese President Antonio Jose Seguro said on Wednesday that Portugal will firmly uphold international law and work to advance peace, security and sustainable development during its tenure on the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

In a statement, Seguro said that Portugal's election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council reflects international recognition of the country's commitment to multilateralism and support for the UN.

Portugal was elected non-permanent member of the UN Security Council on Wednesday for a two-year term, and will assume its seat on Jan. 1, 2027, serving until Dec. 31, 2028.

Seguro said that during its two-year term on the Security Council, Portugal will uphold international law, promote peace, security and sustainable development, and engage in constructive dialogue and cooperation with all countries.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro described the election as "a great achievement for Portugal on the largest stage of international politics," and pledged to promote dialogue and cooperation while defending human rights, fighting poverty and advancing sustainable development.
