NEW DELHI, March 9 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people were killed Saturday in a head-on collision between a car and goods truck in eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, officials said.

The victims were reportedly members of a big family.

The accident took place on a main highway in Ramgarh district, about 47 km north of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand.

"Early in the morning today a car carrying members of an extended family collided head-on with a goods truck here, killing 10 people on spot," a police official said. "The victims, including three women and two children, were returning home after attending a family ritual."

Police have registered a case and ordered investigations into the accident and preliminary investigation reveals that overspeeding is the reason for the accident.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

According to official statistics, an average of over 400 deaths take place every day in India due to road accidents.
